Discover Le Baux's Carrières de Lumières

Carriéres de Lumiéres (Quarries of Light) at Les Baux de Provence

This extraordinary art based multimedia show, unique in the world, is located in an old underground bauxite quarry in the Alpilles near Les Baux de Provence.

The Marseille-Provence 2013 European Capital of Culture has organised an innovative program that includes multimedia shows featuring multiple projections on rock walls profiling the greatest names in the history of art and lighting of the quarry site to reveal the mineral beauty of the rock. Around 3,000 images are projected in the course of 35 minutes on the ceiling, walls and floor, with some of the walls as high as those of Notre Dame de Paris. The shows act as a vehicle to convey emotions and invite visitors to wander freely around the quarries following the projections of the great artists. The audience is completely immersed in the images projected onto all surfaces of the quarry.

The current 2013 show, titled 'Monet, Renoir...Chagall. Trips in the Mediterranean',  focuses on Impressionism, Pointillism and Fauvism until Chagall. It follows artists from the second half of the 19th Century who abandoned Paris in favour of the natural light in the south of France. They settled along the coast between the Spanish and Italian Riviera, depicting seascapes of the Mediterranean coast exploring the sea's luminous colours in a wide variety of styles.
